View list of Resident Paper Awards
Dr. McCravey was born in North Georgia. His early education was in a one-room school house. He later traveled by train for four years to attend high school and was one of five in his graduating class. His pre-med education was at the University of Georgia in Athens. He graduated M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta in 1934. Dr. McCravey served his internship at the Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga and his neurosurgical residency under Dr. Temple Fay at Temple University Medical School in Philadelphia. Anticipating the outbreak of war he joined the U.S. Army Medical Corps in January, 1941, as the first army neurosurgeon at that period. He served through out WWII in charge of one of seventeen U.S. Army neurosurgery centers. After the war Dr. McCravey returned to Chattanooga as the first neurosurgeon in Chattanooga. Dr. Walter Boehm, Sr. later joined Dr. McCravey as his first partner. The group they founded continues today as the Neurosurgical Group of Chattanooga.
Dr. McCravey’s entire professional career was spent at the Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga. He held a number of positions at the hospital including Chief of Staff and was active in teaching residents even after his retirement.
Dr. McCravey was a founding member of the Southern Neurosurgical Society and served as President of the Society in 1969. He was selected as one of the first Distinguished Practitioners in Neurosurgery by the Society in 1981. Dr. McCravey is honored annually by the Augustus McCravey Resident Award Paper given at the annual meeting of the Southern Neurosurgical Society. This award was first established in 1990 through a generous gift of the McCravey family.
